The one-hundredth birthday of the Austrian fiction writer
Heimito von Doderer in 1996 has been marked by a new
beginning in this author's international reception. The
series entitled Schriften der Heimito von
Doderer-Gesellschaft is a point of convergence for
material pertinent to Doderer's work; the series also
provides a forum for themes concerning Austrian literature.
The first volume, "Flügel und Extreme," contains the
recently discovered correspondence between Doderer and his
professor at the University of Vienna, Hermann Swoboda,
psychologist, opponent of Freud, and friend of Otto
Weininger. This correspondence provides entry to an
intellectual context that casts light on the political roots
and other aspects of Doderer's fictional world as well as
his impact on and parallels to Ernst Jünger's field of
activity, for example, or his relation to the political
philosophy of the emigration years. In the forum section,
the literary texts and essays confront the question of what
components went into the making of Doderer's political
views.
