			Heimito von Doderer Prize for Literature
			Heimito von Doderer Prize for Literature 2001 The Heimito von Doderer Prize for Literature, endowed by Henner Löffler, annually honors a body of narrative work that has developed over decades with an award of 15,000 DM. The Emerging Writer Award of the Doderer Prize, in the amount of 6,000 DM, draws attention to a strong first effort in fiction or to an early work that is unknown or has not received the full acclaim it merits. Both prizes are meant to go to authors the impetus for whose writing is fundamentally close in spirit to that of the writer for whom the prizes are named. That spirit encompasses not only "language marked by deep sensitivity and originality in the tradition of the great Austrian author"—to quote the criteria of the award—but also compelling involvement with material that goes beyond tear-jerking depictions of one's own emotional responses and exhibits both maturity of form and a concern for writing well. The jury, whose task is to select worthy recipients in the spirit of the award, has consisted—unchanged since the founding of the Heimito von Doderer Prize for Literature—of Prof. Dr. Jörg Drews, Martina Eichner, Kristin Eilert and, whenever possible, of the prize winner from the previous year.
