Heimito von Doderer – Alexandra Kleinlercher in Conversation with Wolfgang Fleischer |
|||||||||||||||||||||
In 1960, while still in high school, Wolfgang Fleischer (*1943) went to a public reading by Heimito von Doderer that had been organized by the League of Austrian Socialist Students. He asked the author, whose work he held in high esteem, to sign one of his books. Later he wrote to Doderer and was invited to visit him. In 1963, Doderer proposed to Fleischer, who meanwhile had been studying philosophy and history at the University of Vienna since 1961, that the young man become his secretary. Not long before, this duty had been assumed by Doderer's mistress, the writer Dorothea Zeemann, but that working relationship was terminated at the wish of his wife, Emma Maria von Doderer (née Thoma). Fleischer accepted the offer and went to Doderer's apartment two or three times a week in the late afternoon. His duties consisted of handling part of the author's extensive correspondence as well as reading the galley proofs of the Tangenten, Doderer's published diaries. Fleischer worked for Doderer until the author's death in December 1966. He had himself been active as a free-lance writer and translator and made numerous documentary films for television. In 1966 he published Das verleugnete Leben: Die Biographie des Heimito von Doderer (The Forfeited Life: The Biography of Heimito von Doderer – not translated into English). The conversation with Wolfgang Fleischer (in German) took place in Arbesthal (Lower Austria) on August 24, 2003 and in Vienna on February 1, 2004. It was recorded, transcribed, recombined, and submitted to Wolfgang Fleischer with a request for permission to publish.
